What happens to data if equipment is no longer available

Problem: Data storage technologies have changed over time. In classical times people used stone tablets or parchment scrolls. Eventually, books made an appearance, to be followed by the various types of analog tape, up to the digital storage we see in the 21st century. There are no special technologies required to read stone or paper-based storage, but digital storage requires specific equipment to be read. Is this a good thing or a bad thing and why? What happens to the data if the specific equipment is no longer available?
