On a piece of paper make two columns. In one column list all of the advantages of free-format (versus fixed-format) self-report measures. In the other column list all of the advantages of fixed-format (versus free-format) self-report measures. Given these comparisons, what factors might lead a researcher to choose one approach over the other?
