This question is taken in part from the Inequalities Section of the Capitol Steps Stop. In the last several years, people have gathered at the Capitol and other sites around Madison to protest systemic injustices based on race. This includes the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. What factors have we studied in the history of cities that might underlie the issues that sparked protests? How do inequalities continue to be reproduced in contemporary Madison?
