The same applies to reading in a foreign language. In fact, research done on how and what people read shows that only about half of what people comprehend when they read actually comes from grammar and vocabulary. The remaining understanding comes from various sources such as the background knowledge the reader has about the subject, knowledge of the genre (you know that you are reading a TV guide and that you don't have to read everything on the page), and strategies for guessing at what a word means, or what do to when you don't know (for example, in English you would likely just keep reading ahead if you encountered an unknown word), and strategies for looking for looking for clues from subtitles, images, and other material surrounding the written passage. You can use this idea to help you develop your reading ability in Spanish so that you can read more Spanish more quickly, and find information you need for your everyday life.
Let's talk about restaurant reviews. There are several things you already know about restaurant reviews - they usually have some sort of ranking system (stars, etc.) and, they contain individual diners' opinions.
Do a web search on the terms reseña de restaurantes and a Spanish speaking country of your choice, and read at least three different restaurant reviews.
A. What expressions are frequently used in the reviews?
B. How do Spanish language reviews compare to reviews you might have read here?
C. Find a restaurant you'd like to eat at. Compose an email to a friend (or friends) explaining why you'd like to choose this restaurant to visit.
D. Write at least 5 sentences in Spanish. Remember that the usage of translators is not allowed.
