After reading the introduction from Imagined Communities and watching/reading "La Marseillaise", respond to the following question in a paragraph or two.
This era saw the rise of the nation-state on a global level and with that the creation of national symbols such as anthems, national flags, monuments, etc.
Thinking about Anderson's definition of the nation as an "imagined community", how do symbols such as "La Marseillaise" and others contribute to national unity? How do they appeal to the individual?
What other specific examples can you think of in your own experience?
Finally, what factors do you think contributed to the rise of the "nation-state" during this specific period?
