What evidence can you provide to back up your claim

Discussion Post: Motivation & Performance

Throughout history, there has been a great deal of debate over the purpose of emotions. Some argue that emotions must serve a purpose. After all, if they didn't, why would humans have evolved such complex emotional systems and expressions? Others argue that emotions do not serve much of a purpose at all and they are really just a side effect, much like a runny nose is a side effect of a cold. What do you think? Do you think emotions have a purpose or not? If so, what is this purpose, and what evidence can you provide to back up your claim? If not, why do you think emotions serve no purpose, and what evidence can you provide to back up your claim?
