Has Wal-mart had a positive impact or a negative impact on our society? Consider neighborhoods in Chicago that rely on small grocery stores with inflated prices. At the same time, consider the growth of Wal-mart and other big-box stores in suburbs. Do their reduced prices justify changes in things such as customer service and return policies? With their huge profits, do we really see an "invisible hand" extending down to enrich local communities? What does Wall-mart reveal about the present state of capitalism? What would Marx say?
