Problem
The three writers undergo an epiphany as a result of their seperate experience for this what is the conflict and how is it resolved? What does each writer realize and what insight does each offer the reader from their experience? Ultimately what effect does the experience have on them? in your opinion aee they better or worse from your experience?
Part I
The notions of power, control, and the requirement for conformity are the main themes of the author's essay "Shooting an Elephant." The author's argument is that when people are pressured to go against their moral principles in order to appease authority figures, it can cause internal turmoil and a sense of powerlessness in the face of a stronger force. He uses his own personal experience as a colonial police officer in Burma, when he was compelled to kill an elephant against his will in order to placate the mob of villagers, to illustrate this concept.
Part II
The essay was quite strong and thought-provoking in my opinion. Even though it goes against my own moral principles, I could identify with the desire to submit to authority. I was also reminded of the influence power dynamics may have on our choices and how challenging it can be to make tough choices under pressure from a stronger force. It caused me to consider my own life experiences and how I had handled similar circumstances.
