What do you want to communicate about the scene consider

Assignment

Objective: To allow students to review the formal qualities and to reinforce understanding about how each of these contributes to the artwork's meaning. Additionally, this assignment affords students an opportunity to study the visual elements and principles from the perspective of the artist, requiring them to make the choices the artist makes in creating a work of art.

Brief Directions

Picture This

Read the above short story about how principles and elements of design evoke various emotions and can convey different meanings. Visually create 1 scene from Little Red Riding Hood (LRRH) that includes the main characters and components of LRRH using any materials you wish (we will discuss this process in more depth in class). The scene you create should be abstract and focus primarily on line, shape, color, space, pattern, and value, as well as several compositional principles.

Choose 1 scene from LRRH to depict in an abstracted way. What do you want to communicate about the scene? Consider the emotional impact of color, pattern/texture, direction of lines, and depth. What color(s) will your background be?

Choose a color and shape for the abstracted figures that you are presenting. The shape and color should reflect how you interpret each character and their significance in the story. Think about the ways in which color, shape, line, space, etc impact the viewer's perception.

Begin thinking about composition and space and the placement of characters to achieve impact and emphasis. Don't forget that placement may have something to do with your assessment of LRRH's character. How might you use color, shape and pattern for emphasis or to direct the viewer's attention?

Finalize your composition. (2 pages).
