• Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as part of wartime policy. Given what you know about the prewar period, do you feel that emancipation was coming during Lincoln's administration, regardless of whether or not there was the outbreak of war? Or, do you feel that Emancipation would not have occurred without the situation created by the war?
• Abraham Lincoln's assassination poses one of the great "what if?" moments in American history. Based on what you know from the course, what do you think would have happened with Reconstruction had Lincoln lived? Would he have worked with Radical Republicans or would there have been division?
