1. Listening to Performances Other than Music

There are differences in listening appreciatively depending on the context: live (face-to-face) versus recorded or transmitted performances (TV, video, radio). Whether you are listening to a televised/recorded play or you are at a live play there is something about the context that makes us enjoy one or the other more.

2. What do you think the factors are that help in the appreciative listening experience? Which do you enjoy more and why?

(REMINDER: Answer this only for performances OTHER than music.)

This is an example: I love going to the theater. For me, there is just something magical about sitting in the theater audience watching the actors bring the story to life (right in front of me).

As an audience member I know I will have to be attentive and focused -- particularly if the play is one I haven't seen before or if the language being used is difficult (for example, Shakespearean English). I enjoy this challenge. My daughter starred in Taming of the Shrew (Katherina) last spring. As always, she refused to run lines with me so that I would hear her utter her lines for the first time on opening night.

I spent some time reading about the background of the story to truly appreciate the play. It was a very enjoyable evening of entertainment in an outside arena style theater on a beautiful spring evening.
