What do you think of what lord elgin did

Problem: When the Earl of Elgin removed original marble carvings and statues from the Acropolis (Athens, Greece), he did so with what he considered noble and honorable intentions. Lord Elgin proposed the idea of removing these artworks from their place of origin and replacing them with copies, because they (the originals) had deteriorated severely and he believed they would be safer under proper conservation conditions in England. The Elgin collection eventually went on display at the British Museum (in 1817), it has been a source of controversy. What do you think of what Lord Elgin did? Do you see his reasons? Do you find them persuasive? How would you describe the morality of this situation?
