Assignment task: Additional notes on Hughes and Hurston, both writers saw their roles a bit differently when it came to portraying African Americans for both Black and White readers. This issue of the audience will be the focus of this discussion.
In at least two paragraphs, address the following questions: What do you think African American readers would have seen about themselves in the works you read by Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston? What might readers of other races perceive about African Americans from reading Hughes and Hurston? Since both writers were associated with the Harlem Renaissance, it might help to keep in mind the shared beliefs within that artistic movement as you think about these questions. Support your answers with textual evidence, though I recognize that the questions are largely speculative, so best with them. Still, make your reasoning and evidence as clear as possible.
