What do you think accounts for the shift

Problem

At the beginning of Act Two, the Stage Manager notes that, "Almost everybody in the world gets married,-you know what I mean? In our town there aren't hardly any exceptions. Most everybody in the world climbs into their graves married (48)." Later he notes: "I've married over two hundred couples in my day. Do I believe in it? I don't know" (82). How has the role of marriage and what we understand marriage to be in American society changed? What do you think accounts for this shift? Do you think people still believe in marriage? Do you think marriage is as relevant today as it once was?
