VY Mudimbe and Chinua Achebe are both African writers and scholars who, through their works, challenge and critique early imaginaries (or conceptualizations) of Africa and Africans as perpetuated by colonizers, anthropologists, and other actors. While the purpose of their works is similar, they have come to their conclusions through different mediums: Achebe writes his critique as a novel, while Mudimbe writes his critique as an academic text. Type a five paged response paper comparing and contrasting the content of their work: what are the critiques they make, and how do they use their specific mediums to make these arguments? What do you take to be the strengths and weaknesses of each which medium, and why? Demonstrate your answers to these questions using examples from each book. Please assume you are writing this paper for your friends and family who have never taken this class or have done these readings. You want to help them understand the aforementioned critiques and comments on these particular imaginaries of Africa.
