Case: Can the Conflict Be Resolved?
You supervise the housekeeping department for a hotel and there are 10 housekeepers cleaning the guestrooms. Each housekeeper works alone to be in charge their specific room areas. Linda Lees finishes her work in about 75 percent the time required by the other housekeepers. Because she finishes faster, Linda takes longer breaks and has more time for lunch than other housekeepers. On breaks and after she has completed her work for the day, Linda usually works on assignments for the college courses she is taking. Linda does not seem to have much in common with the other housekeepers and spends little time talking with them.
All the housekeepers receive the same pay and there is no extra pay for greater output. The company policy is that the pay for jobs that are primarily manual labor is to be on an hourly basis, with all employees doing the same job receiving the same hourly pay rate.
The other housekeepers frequently complain about Linda's longer breaks and her studying. You have encouraged Linda to work toward a degree, and approved her studying during breaks as long as she did her share of the work. Even though the other housekeepers agree that Linda gets her share of the work done, they have requested you assign her more work. You know that if you don't take action there will be continuing conflict between Linda and the other housekeepers.

1. What do you believe is the main cause of the conflict among the housekeepers?
a) The main cause of the conflict among the housekeepers is many housekeepers complain that Linda takes long brakes and does her school work during work time. Linda is doing her work faster than the other housekeepers so she has more time for herself. Linda is not friends with the rest of the housekeepers which makes her always be by herself and just do her work and study. She does not talk with the other housekeepers.
2. As a supervisor, should you continue to allow Linda to take longer breaks and study on the job? If you do, how will you explain your action to the other housekeepers?
