1. Answer three questions and a paragraph on a weblink:

a. Choose three of the questions listed in the discussion board forum to answer. Questions with multiple questions count as one. Then include a short paragraph report about the information you find from a weblink located under the Chapters/Lessons folders in Blackboard.

b. The total word count of each of your answers must be at least 200 words each (do not count the questions or bibliography in this) So this means at least 800 total. Be sure to include the questions you pick so it is easier for everyone to read.

1. Who were the leading figures of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, and what were their main contributions?

2. Read pages 477-478 "Opposing Viewpoints: The Natural Rights of the French People: Two Views"-How does the first selection conform to the thought of the Enlightenment? Which Enlightenment thinkers seem to have been most influential? What exactly is the "nation," and how well do these stipulations correspond to the political system that the National Assembly put into effect in 1791? To what degree does de Gouges also draw on the Enlightenment? Where are the differences between the two documents the most pointed and telling?

3. What do historians mean by the term enlightened absolutism, and to what degree did eighteenth-century Prussia, Austria, and Russia exhibit its characteristics?

4. What were the basic features of the new industrial system created by the Industrial Revolution, and what effects did the new system have on urban life, social classes, family life, and standards of living?

5. How do the locations of the centers of industrialization today compare with those during the Industrial Revolution, and how do you account for any differences?

6. What is nationalism? How did it arise, and what impact did it have on the history of the nineteen and twentieth centuries? What were the similarties and dissimilarities in the development of Latin American nations, the United States, and Canada in the nineteenth century?

7. In the late nineteenth century, new work opportunities for women emerged, but many middle and upper class women were still expected to remain at home. What are the new opportunities and challenges for women today, and how do they compare with those in the nineteenth century?

8. Read page 518 "Simón Bolívar on Government in Latin America"-In The Jamaica Letter, Simón Bolívar argues that the political and social circumstances in Latin American independence are unique. What does he mean by that? Is he convincing in his claim? Why or why not? What problems does he see for Latin America's future? To what degree does his reasoning reflect Enlightenment thought?

9. What were the similarities and dissimilarities in the development of Latin American nations, the United States, and Canada in the nineteenth century?

10. How is modernism evident in literature and the arts between 1870 and 1914? How do these literary and artistic products reflect the political and social developments of the age?
