What did we gain through this approach

Problem

Throughout this term we read three ethnographic pieces, Born a Crime (by Trevor Noah), Street life under the sun (by Emily Margaretten), and Email from Ngeti (by James Smith and Ngeti Mwadine). The goal of reading these book was to use three specific case studies to bring broader themes and dynamics relevant to contemporary Africa/ns into view with a high degree of intimacy. In using this approach to learn about global Africa, there are both pros and cons and show by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful thoughts on "The Danger of a Single Story." Now that we have finished our academic journey with the people whose lives are depicted in the three ethnographies, what do you see as the pros and cons of the life "up close" approach I used in the class. What did we gain through this approach? What did we miss?
