What created a degree of social stability

Problem: Prior to Galileo, societies supported by the "Great Chain of Being" created a degree of social stability, such that those at the top were responsible for providing or caring for/protecting those below them, and those at the bottom were responsible for obeying and serving their superiors. This model of social hierarchy is consistent with the basic definition of society as one in which all people work for the common good.
