Roosevelt contends that "the cause of social and industrial justice" could only be realized "by the plain people through the resolute and conscientious use of all the machinery, public and private, State and National, governmental and individual, which is at their command." Roosevelt's critics suggest that this belief led to the expansion of government into areas that should have remained in the private sector.
