Athenian democracy put many of the key democratic concepts in place a couple of thousand years ago. One could argue that the smart phone has made Athenian style participatory democracy available again in a globalized world.
With the ubiquity of cell phones in industrialized societies, couldn't the US and other developed nations simply use the devices to promote debates over public policy and priorities?
Would participatory democracy work in the world of the smart phone, or would republican forms of government still be preferred?
What concepts would democratic theorists need to add to the Athenian model to make that model relevant in a globalizing world?
