What checks-and-balances can we put into place

Assignment task: I need help response to my peers?

1. Thank you for your post. I really like the mention of applying learned knowledge in practical settings since most instructors are very concerned about "real world application". Perhaps more importantly, I believe that is the main point with most students as well. In training we call it "WIIFM" (What's in it for me?). Meaning, if I don't need to know this for my job/career quit wasting my time. However, we have spent time in this class talking about identity, vocation, and calling which makes me think of a holistic approach to life and wellbeing. I have recently realized that I simply need to slow down and not be so worries about EVERYTHING :). Maybe it's just a season but I am intentionally focusing on work and life balance.

What checks-and-balances can we put into place to ensure we don't get off balance?

2. In many ways we can "selfishly" look at internships or volunteering as a way to expand our skillset or invest in oneself. However, is it selfish to grow professionally, yet benefit or serve another organization? I have several friends who chose to take their families (including small children) on mission trips where they often visit other countries, and work very hard. However, their children seem to always come back with a MUCH GREATER appreciation for all the blessings they have in America because their perspective has now changed as a result of their exposure to another culture. Could experiencing multiple internships have a similar result or impact on our perspective? Please share your thoughts.
