Response to Discussion Questions: (EACH QUESTION HAS TO BE 150 -200 words at least)
1) Imagine you are present at the premiere of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." Like the rest of the audience, you have a strong reaction to the music (either positive or negative). Other class members present at the premiere had the opposite reaction.
Attempt to sway their viewpoint by discussing Stravinsky's compositional techniques and recalling the musical tradition of past centuries
2) Most of the composers discussed this week created music that grappled with or attempted to mediate with genres and styles of the past. What artists can you think of that confront and try to assimilate or at least reconcile with styles and practices that are strongly identified with an earlier musical era? Does that artist's use or acknowledgment of those earlier styles seem to come out of reverence and respect for that earlier era or a desire to leave it behind once and for all?
