Although we always want to consider the care of the client as our main focus, it is also important to consider the counsellor. When we conduct counseling from the privacy of our homes the client might be exposed to private information about us that they might ordinarily not have. Similarly, we may feel somewhat protective of our private space and might have personal discomfort with utilizing our homes to conduct online therapy.
Additionally, it is not uncommon for an individual to look up their therapist online. I have also know for individuals to drive to try and find their therapist's home. Given the nature of the counseling, it is also possible that some clients feel as though they are friends with their therapist. As such, we have to be mindful of the information that is readily available to the public so as to protect our own privacy and safety.
What are your thoughts about clients violating the privacy of their counsellor in such a manner?
