Using Ohm's Law, describe how a physical stimulus that is coupled to the opening or closing of ion channels in the membrane can result in a change in membrane potential. Why is this a very flexible and robust technique for encoding information? What are the two ways in which membrane potential can change (relative to resting potential)?
