Overview

This research assignment contains two topics: Revitalization and Unincorporated Areas. You are to research and discussed each topic separately. Research should go beyond the websites provided.

TOPIC 1: Revitalization

The need for cities and urban spaces to reinvent themselves is continuous. This process is often called revitalization, reinvestment, renewal or redevelopment. Sometimes the process includes gentrification. Revitalizing urban geography has pros and cons. What group(s) of people are adversely impacted, and what groups benefit? The impact on the environment, infrastructure, land use, social services and city budgets are major considerations. There are winners and losers. Successful redevelopment projects are successful planning projects, where there are minimum negative consequences and (an) overall improved quality of life.

TOPIC 2: Unincorporated Areas

Counties are among the oldest forms of local government. All states have some form of county government. The structure and names of "county" government can differ from state to state. For example, in Louisiana counties are called parishes. The state of Virginia has many "independent cities" that are not part of a county. Thus, throughout the USA, there are somewhat small deviations in counties or a state's administrative seats. This assignment researches a little discussed part of a county: those areas in a county that are not incorporated. These areas are simply called the unincorporated areas.

Note: County unincorporated areas should not be confused with unincorporated territories such as Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
