Discussion Post: Applying Theory

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

• What are some considerations when applying theory to assessment and treatment of clients?

• I believe the biggest factor to consider when treating clients is that they are human beings. No matter how much we have tried to scientifically explain existence, there is no rule book or specific answer for how life should happen. People are widely unique and have different backgrounds, beliefs, financial situations, levels of support, and willingness to participate. All theories have general rules, concepts, philosophies and applications. But, that is not quite how humans are. Each person operates differently from someone else; and even differently than themselves in various situations. For example, a patient might be very resistant to treatment at first because they were brought there against their will. However, that same client might respond well as treatment progresses through assessment as they have gained a new perspective. Psychological theories are often developed based upon one person's, or a group of people's, opinions, ideas and experiences. Also, they are likely to be influenced by the clientele they interact with.As we have learned many times throughout this program, the most defining characteristic of client success in counseling is the therapeutic relationship. Theory is needed and extremely helpful to direct treatment. But, I have the opinion that it is not the most important aspect for our clients and doesn't necessarily need to be for us either.

• What are the primary goals of behavioral interventions?

• What do you think is the most important step in the counseling relationship? Why? How does your choice reflect your theoretical biases?
