What are the most important ones that should be highlighted

PART 1: write a FACT SHEET on what happened in the company you represent. First gather all the information about the happening (given you in the handouts), then choose what are the most important ones that should be highlighted in the FACT SHEET.

Check you are including all the relevant information with the usual WH questions (Who/What, When, Where, How, Why)

Remember a FACT SHEET is a document that a journalist or an editor could use to write a story about the company you represent. The story can be broadcast on TV, published in a newspaper or posted on a website.

As the name suggests, the FACT SHEET covers just the facts. So be sure not to add too many details or comments, but to highlight WHY the fact should be interesting and WHAT is the "new" inside it. Do not write a story. FACT SHEETS are the document that writers and journalists will use to write a story, so let this up to them. It is not meant for publication in its present format.

Refer to the example in the handouts for the format. Remember the title and stay within one page.

PART 2: write a NEWS RELEASE on the same happening that you described in the fact sheet. First decide which of the following elements your story will have (at least 2):

timeliness (this story contains something really new)
impact (this story contains something that will impact the lives of the readers)
uniqueness (this story is different form similar stories)
conflict (this story is about a conflict between 2 or more groups)
proximity (this story is happening so close to the readers)
celebrity (this story involves a famous person (politician, entertainer or leader) .

Check you are including all the relevant information with the usual WH questions (Who/What, When, Where, How, Why) and that you are adding all the details to make the story interesting (in the way you choose above). Include quotes. Put the information in order of importance. Include pictures.

Remember a NEWS RELEASE is a story about the company you represent that a journalist could choose to publish because he finds it interesting for the readers. The story can be broadcast on TV, written in a newspaper or posted on a website.

As the name suggests, the NEWS RELEASE covers facts in a way that transforms them in NEWS. So be sure to add as many details or comments you think are right. Write a story so that journalists will use it directly and will not have to rewrite it. It is meant for publication in its present format.

Refer to the example in the handouts for the format. Remember the title and stay within two pages.
