Mitscherlich conducted a large number of experiments with different plants, making use of pots 20 cm in diameter and 20 cm in depth. By adding what he considered a sufficiency of all growth factors but one, and then increasing the amounts of this one factor or nutrient by given increments, he determined the quantity of this nutrient that would give maximum yield.
