Assume that country is located in region that is strategically important to the United States, that there are concerns that the civil war might spill over international borders cause regional instability, and that the regime is nondemocratic and guilty of human rights abuses.
(a) What are the main pros and cons for economic sanctions against the regime and/or the armed groups that are fighting against the regime?

(b) What types of sanctions would you recommend and why?

Second Assignment Question
The focus this week is on the future world including the concept of a global civil society. Drawing on the Newby (2012) article and the lesson for this week, explore the concept of global civil society within the real world example of Egypt. Start by defining the concept and then assess Newby's 5 part strategy for US aid to civil society in Egypt.
