1. Before you know it, it will be that time of year again: April 15th! As a service to taxpayers who would rather not use a call center, the IRS has a "Where's My Refund?" website at https://www.irs.gov (the link is in the middle of the page.on the right side) The purpose of the site is to allow taxpayers to check on the status of their refund. Try to determine the status of your refund (but don't post what you find out!).
What are the issues for e-Government websites such as "Where's My Refund?" What's been done to authenticate users, and to insure privacy? Are there other approaches that could have been used? What are some other e-Government sites that provide comparable services?
2. Research and report on a current or recent malware (e.g., Trojan, virus, or worm) attack. Describe its method and effects. Be sure to indicate the source of your information.
3. Widespread use of cryptography can mean trouble for law enforcement and security personnel when crooks and spies use cryptography to secure their communications from wiretapping. Under U.S. law, communications utilities are required to provide law enforcement access to communication links when proper judicial process has been observed. Such access is useless if the messages they provide access to are encrypted with powerful security. For years, the U.S. and other countries have tried to control the spread of cryptographic technologies, with little success.
What should public policy be with regard to free use of cryptographic systems? What can realistically be done to implement restrictive policies?
