Assignment
The purpose of the research paper is to give the student an opportunity to pick a topic of interest, collect real-world data, and apply some regression methods. The following outline/sections should be in the paper:
I. Introduction and Objective
a. Statement: What factors that affecting foodborne sickness in European Countries?
b. Brief review of relevant literature (3-4 key papers related to your topic) for context (simply find 3-4 relevant literature to talk about what factors affecting foodborne sickness)
II. Description of the regression model
a. What are the dependent and independent variables? (variables are in the Excel, y-variable is the sickness rate, others are x-variables)
b. What does theory/literature review say about the expected signs of the parameter estimates?
c. What is the specific hypothesis?
III. Data and methods
a. Describe the data sources
Article: The comparative burden of salmonellosis in the European Union member states, associated and candidate countries by Birgitta de Jong and Karl Ekdahl.
Wikipedia: List of countries by meat consumption
Population density (people per sq. km of land area) (Food and Agriculture Organization and World Bank population estimates.)
b. Present simple summary statistics of the data (use Stata)
c. Describe the analytic regression methods, including statistical tests and/or corrections the student has made to the model
IV. Results
a. Describe and interpret the results; what do they mean?
b. Do they support or not support the original hypothesis? Why or why not?
V. Discussion
a. Discuss your findings in the context of your literature review. Are your results consistent or different? Why?
b. Discuss limitations of results. Are there issues with bias or efficiency?
c. What are the implications of the results for public policy?
A few things to be mindful of:
Length: this should be a short paper, approximately 15-20 pages of 1.5 spaced pages (excluding tables, graphs, bibliography). The student should integrate the tables/graphs into the text as it makes the paper easier to read, rather than flipping back and forth to appendices.
Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
2. The response also include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
3. Also Include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
