Consider the following scenario: For years you have been impressed by Kurt, one of your coworkers. He has been a tireless worker and has moved up in the ranks of your organization into top management. In addition to being ambitious and high achieving, Kurt is also a very personable, compassionate, and fair-minded manager. He is widely regarded as a uniquely skilled leader. One day you come to work and find out that he has been fired.
The reason for his firing is that your employer has discovered that Kurt misrepresented himself when first applying for employment at your organization; he claimed to have a master's degree when he had obtained only a bachelor's degree. Do you think your company is justified in firing Kurt? Do you have any ethical obligation to try to help him, considering your long and harmonious superior/subordinate relationship?
