What are the causes or effects of global warming - what

Causal Argument, Assignment

Using Sources and Giving Credit to Sources with MLA Style

LENGTH: 5 pages (bottom of page 5)

Final (polished) Draft:

Causal arguments answer the questions why and what is the result? You can focus on many causes for one effect, many effects from one cause, or some causes that lead to some effects.

Cause/effect essays show the causes, the effects, or both the causes and the effects. Causes are reasons why something happened. The effects are the results of the cause.

History classes are often concerned with the causes of wars or other major events or with the effects of an election on history. Economics classes look at the causes or effects of changes in the economy. Psychology examines the causes of certain problems. Science classes study the effects or results of lab experiments. Causes and effects are common ways of looking at the world around us. Why do events happen? What are the results of those events?

Often each body paragraph describes a separate cause or a separate effect. Usually a writer will organize the body paragraphs in order of increasing importance or effectiveness-from the least important to most important.

You must do research for this essay. See the last page of this assignment sheet.

USING MLA:
For this essay, find four or five reliable sources (which is discussed in Chapter 15 and which we will discuss in class).

You must use MLA format, which is explained in the first part of Chapter 17. The pages that discuss MLA are edged in red.

MLA uses in-text citations in the essay where the source is used in the essay. These citations point to the sources listed on the Works Cited page at the end on a separate page.If you plagiarize, you will fail the essay.

You must have five full pages of essay. The Works Cited page should be on page six or seven.

EVALUATION CHECK LIST:
Content: Did you create a clear claim or thesis that states the topic and your opinion on the topic? Did you cover all key points? Does one idea logically follow the previous one (organization)? Are paragraphs unified (one idea fully developed in each paragraph)? Do the ideas and paragraphs connect to each other (transitions)? Did you use standard grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word choice? Is the essay five full pages long?

Documentation: Did you properly cite sources within the paper and on the Works Cited page (blatant plagiarism will not be tolerated)? You must hand in a copy of one of your sources, and from that source, you must have used one direct quote and one paraphrase. If you plagiarize, the paper will automatically fail.

Sources: Have you cited at least four reliable sources in your essay? Have you used all of the sources on your Works Cited page in your paper? Did you put all sources used on your Works Cited page? If the citations and Works Cited page do not match, the essay will automatically fail.

Format: Put all previous work for this project in a two-pocket folder to hand in. Your name should be on the front cover of the folder. The final draft should be on top so it is the first thing I see when I open your folder.
