Discussion Post: Kangaroo
A premature baby in Australia is pronounced dead but was resuscitated after his mother placed him on her chest in what is known as the kangaroo care method. To find out more about the story. YouTube Video: "Preemie Baby Saved with 'Kangaroo Care?'".
Research showed that Kangaroo care (i.e. skin-to-skin care) has positive benefits for both infants and mothers. When compared with standard crib care, in which there is minimal skin-to-skin contact, kangaroo care appears to offer physiological benefits for infants and psychological benefits to fathers as well as mothers.
For this discussion, watch the YouTube video above and read the article "Kangaroo care for the preterm infant and family" by Ann L Jefferies and Canadian Paediatric Society, Fetus and Newborn Committee from Ann L Jefferies and then answer the following questions:
• What are the benefits of kangaroo care for newborn infants?
• What might be some of the benefits of kangaroo care for parents of newborn infants?
• How do you think the maturity, birth-weight, and other characteristics of the newborn baby influence the ease with which parents use kangaroo care? What might be some of the concerns for parents of preterm, low-birthweight infants?
