Toulmin argument (also called Toulmin logic). Toulmin argument (and the terms he's assigned to its parts) will allow you to create the kind of rigorously supported arguments, in any academic topic, that your future professors will expect. (Even if they won't be able to verbalize what they want,-"Where is your warrant, here?"-I guarantee that they want narrowed, qualified claims and rigorous support exactly as Toulmin has lined out.)
For Wednesday's post be sure to read Ch. 7 in EAA and answer the following questions:
• What are the basic elements of Toulmin argument? In your own words, describe the understanding you have of each element.
• How do these elements work together to create what I've been calling "rigorously supported arguments"? In answering this question, comment on why perhaps, as I have suggested, Toulmin logic is so important in formal, intellectual, and academic arguments.
