In the DSM-5, major depression is defined as a category that is presumed to be qualitatively distinct from normal sadness. However, many researchers have argued that in future editions of the DSM, major depression should be defined as a dimensional construct on a continuum with normal sad moods. What are the advantages and disadvantages of defining depression dimensionally versus categorically?
