Observe a scanner and Point-of-Sale (POS) system checkout counter at a store such as K-Mart, Target or Wal-Mart and answer the questions that follow:
1) How does the scanned bar-code get translated into the price you pay?
2) Identify the inputs, processes and outputs of the system?
3) What other systems does this system interact with?
4) What are some of the additional managerial uses of the information?
5) Some store scanner and POS systems are being replaced by self-service checkout kiosks. Compare the two systems in terms of speed, ease of use and problems that you may encounter.
