Homework: Coaching Style Analysis
The purpose of this homework is to provide students an opportunity to examine specified coaching-related topics in greater depth, and to demonstrate comprehension of such topics through reading and writing skills.
Instructions:
1. Read the notes on Three Coaching Styles below
2. Select a total of five videos, from the video clips linked below, or clips of any other coaches you locate online.
3. For each clip, answer the following items
• Based on the video clips, into which coaching style would you place the coach and why?
• What are strong suits or positive traits you see in this coach?
• What are concerns or flaws you see in this coach?
• Is this a coach on whom you would model yourself?
Three Coaching Styles
1. Command Style (the dictator)
• Coach makes all decisions
• Athletes listen, absorb, and comply
• An example of a command coach is Bobby Knight
2. Submissive Style (the baby-sitter)
• Coaches provide minimal instruction and guidance
• Coaches lack competence, are lazy, or are misinformed about coaching
3. Cooperative Style (the teacher)
• Coaches share decision making with athletes
• The challenge of this style is balancing when to direct athletes and when to let them direct themselves
• An example of a cooperative coach is Phil Jackson
Coaching Styles Evaluated
1. Dismiss the Submissive Style
2. Command Style is not compatible with Athletes First, Winning Second; it may stifle motivation and development objectives and alienate athletes
3. Cooperative Style provides structure and rules and allows athletes to set their own goals and strive for them
4. Cooperative Style coaching is more complex and requires ore skill
Format your homework according to the give formatting requirements:
• The answer must be using Times New Roman font (size 12), double spaced, typed, with one-inch margins on all sides.
