Defining "institutional racism" is sometimes difficult for people, but it affects our present-day American existence. The video above is an attempt to provide a visual representation of how American history has created a need to achieve equity in modern times. Using the videos, name some of the obstacles that have contributed to unequal opportunities in the United States. (Note: Affirmative Action and implicit bias will be discussed at a later date within this course). How might these obstacles relate to your profession, either now or in the future?

Using our sociological imagination can allow trained professionals the opportunity to solve structural issues in American society. Keeping this in mind, please address the following issues.
a) Select an example of a "private trouble" and
b) What factors/evidence would you use to explain how and why it may reflect a structural problem in society?
c) What are some potential solutions to this problem, both for the individual and the group to which they belong?
d) Which theoretical perspective lens would you apply to solve this issue: functionalism, conflict theory, or symbolic interactionism? Why?
The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
