Write an essay (2-5 pages) that addresses ALL of the following:
1. What are social movements and why should they be studied?
2. When and why do social movements occur?
3. Do some research on one of the social movements of the 20th century, involving African Americans and their allies such as race riots during the Red Summer of 1919, the civil rights of the 1960s, labor movements and activism led by organizations such as National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) etc. in the United States.
a. Provide a brief summary of the movement, and methods/tactics that were used
b. In your assessment what did the movement achieve at the time and long-term?
c. If modern technology was available during this period, in what ways would it have influenced the movement?
d. Do you think change would have come more quickly or more slowly with modern technology? Defend your opinion.
E. Conclude the essay with your opinion(s) on the historical significance of the particular social movement you selected. What lessons can modern day society learn from it?
