According to Gall, Borg, and Gall (1996), the most frequent mistakes in reviewing literature are:
- The literature review does not relate to their study.
- Does not take time to define best descriptors and best resources to use in review literature related to one's topic.
- Does not use primary sources, use mostly secondary sources.
- Uses another's research data as valid without validating the research
- Does not report search procedures used in the review of the literature.
- Reports isolated statistical results than synthesizing them by chi-square or meta-analytic methods.
- Does not consider contrary findings and alternative interpretation in synthesizing quantitative literature.
What should be done instead:
- All literature reviews should incorporate literature that is relevent to your study.
- Best descriptors and best resources should be indentified .
- Use primary resources instead of secondary sources.
- Valid all research conducted.
- Synthesize all results using the chi-square or meta-analytic method.
- Consider all research finding in synthesizing your quantitative literature.
