• You are the Executive Director, and you are also the person responsible for all human resources-related work.
• A Programs Coordinator, Adiba, is responsible for the artistic and educational programming, works part-time. Adiba said she did not want to stay in the office any later than she already does, because she likes being home when her young children come home from school. She is dependable and always does good work, but she is not always willing to do evening work related to the artistic programming, and she often depends on you or others for educational programming ideas rather than researching or creating them herself.
• Your Director of Development, Moshiur, has been with the organization for four years. He works part-time.has some great experience, and is very good at grant writing and working with individual donors; however, he has little experience with large fundraising events and corporate sponsorship, and no experience at all with capital campaigns, all of which are things the Board thinks will be crucial for the next phase of the organization's growth.
The board Chair, told you (in front of the whole board) that he could not see the current staff members filling these full-time positions; he said, "they don't fit the future vision of the organization that the board and the corporate sponsor have discussed at length". Several other board members nodded along when he said this - this obviously wasn't a new idea to them, even though it was new to you! You didn't say anything in the moment, as you simply didn't know what to say. You have been avoiding his calls for the past few days, but you know you can't keep doing this forever. The next board meeting is in 24 days, and you have a standing meeting a week before that to set the agenda.
