Australia required that incandescent light bulbs be phased out by 2010 in favor of the more fuel-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Ireland's ban started in 2009, and the United States is scheduled to start phasing out incandescent bulbs by 2012 (Brian M. Carney, "Bye Bye, Light Bulb," Wall Street Journal, January 2, 2008, A10). These restrictions are expected to reduce carbon and global warming. What alternative approaches could be used to achieve the same goals? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a ban relative to the alternatives?
