The overall adaptive strategy, in essence, this is simply determining based on the external and internal assessment whether the overall company needs to be in a growth mode, a contraction mode or stay about the same size overall. Of course, the overall adaptive strategy for the company should be the sum of the appropriate adaptive strategies for each strategic buiness unit. In general, if both the external and internal environments are positive, a growth overall adaptive strategy normally makes sense and if both environments are negative, a contraction adaptive strategy normally makes sense. What adaptive strategy do you think makes sense if the external environment is positive, but the internal environment is negative (that is you have no distinct competitive advantages and/or have several competitive disadvantages) and what would you focus on? Likewise, what adaptive strategy makes sense to you if the external environment is negative (i.e., in the decline phase and is shrinking) but you have some distinct competitive advantages and, in this case, what would you focus on?
