Assignment
For this assignment I want you to do some external research on some of the topics covered in the lectures provided so far in this unit. More specifically I want you to take a closer look at laws and policies against sexting, and revenge porn. Recall that in the lecture I discussed how the laws related to sexing vary greatly across jurisdictions. For example, if a juvenile sends a sext to another juvenile some places have it decimalized while others treat it as a sex crime under child pornography laws. The following website will likely be useful as it charts out the status of the laws as they currently stand in all 50 states.
But feel free to search other resources.
For this assignment, sample policy or legislation against sexting. In other words, what do you think would be the appropriate response to the problem. As part of you model policy you should consider the following.
A. What is the current law in your home state (West Virginia)?
B. As far as your own model policy.
a. What should the law state when an adult sends a sext to a juvenile?
b. What about when a juvenile sends one to another juvenile?
c. Think about how you define sexting and what the penalty should be for different offenses.
d. What should the punishments be for the offense/ different circumstances of an offense.
e. What about when a juvenile sends it themselves vs when someone else shares it without their permission (such as revenge porn)?
f. Justify your responses and cite any resources you use to do so.
As you can see there are many things to consider. Which is likely why the laws are so different across the United States.
