Many states, including Texas, authorize homeowners to use deadly force against intruders regardless of an immediate threat to their own safety. As such, Nye's error in the essay "Museum" could have had a far more tragic consequence.
To what extent should homeowners be allowed to shoot first and ask questions later in the case of a home invasion? What about someone on the street who feels threatened? Under what circumstances, if any, should personal freedoms be limited in the name of public safety?
