Assignment:
The next five weeks will cover the 5 disability areas covered by the Academic Behavioral Strategist license; Autism, Developmental Cognitive Disabilities, Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Specific Learning Disabilities, and Other Health Disabilities (focus mostly on ADHD as it is the most frequently seen).
You will be creating the Profiles of the ABS project which will need to be uploaded into SL&L by Watermark. Each of you has an account. Details of the project are in a separate module for you to easily refer back to. You may want to work on this a little at a time as you continue through chapters. There are examples in the module as well. Need Assignment Help?
This week we begin with Chapter 5: Specific Learning Disabilities.
Activity #1:
- Introduction to activity: Considerable controversy still exists over what a learning disability is. There are numerous definitions, but the two definitions that are noted most often and that largely shape students' programs and services are the federal definition (I D E A) and the N J C L D definition.
- Your task is to compare and contrast the two definitions. You can use any type of graphic organizer that you feel captures your comparison.
Activity #2:
Handout 5.1
- We will now examine the steps involved in identifying a student as eligible for special education services under the label of learning disabilities. This usually follows some type of prereferral intervention where it is decided that, even with evidence-based instructional strategies, the student is still in need of additional services. There are two approaches discussed in this chapter. Response to intervention includes prereferral intervention, rather than coming after it. The other approach, the traditional approach, follows pre-referral intervention.
- Compose a reflection/discussion on the differences, and the pros and cons between the traditional approach and the R T I/M T S S approach to identifying students with learning disabilities.
Activity #3: Issues Related to Providing Education to Students with Disabilities at the College Level
- Lead a discussion regarding students with learning disabilities in college.
- Should they be held to the same criteria for entrance?
- Should the admissions criteria be changed?
- What supports should students with L D receive?
- What are ways that student with L D can advocate for themselves?
