Problem
This unit you were introduced to three cultures, Asian (which includes individuals who identify as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Cambodian and Filipino), Pacific Islander, and Native American cultures. As you found from the readings, within each culture there are unique customs and traditions that counseling and human services professionals should be aware of to provide respectful and effective services.
1. For each of the following cultures, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American, identify and discuss one cultural tradition/custom that most interested you and explain why. If you identify as Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American, what is one tradition/custom that you value the most and why? (Be sure to respond to the first question as far as the two cultures you do not identify with.)
2. Select one culture addressed this unit (e.g. Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native Americans) and describe what a counseling and human services professional needs to know about the culture to work effectively and respectfully with a client from that culture. Also be sure to select a culture different from your own in answering this question.
3. Also, identify and discuss one misconception about each of the three cultures addressed this unit. Also share with the class a potential source/reason for each of the misconceptions you identified. In addition, please also detail the importance for a counseling and human services professional to be cognizant of these misconceptions in working with clients in the field.
