Homework: Reverse Outline
For this activity, you will construct a reverse outline of your persuasive essay draft. Answer the following questions to make a reverse outline of the essay draft you completed in the previous module. You should begin by opening your essay in a word processing program like Microsoft Word. Then, in a separate Word document, complete the following steps.
o Type or copy and paste your thesis into your Word document.
o Type or copy and paste your first body paragraph into your Word document (TIP: If you retype it, you might catch small-scale errors, such as grammar or punctuation).
o In the body paragraph you just copied, designate each element of the PIE method (Point, Information, and Explanation) by placing the letter P, I, or E in front of the corresponding sentence. Then, type brief notes about whether or not you need more information. (TIP: If you're having trouble finding the elements of the PIE method, it might indicate a problem and the need for revision.)
o Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the rest of your body paragraphs.
You have not yet completed the activity below. Once you've completed the steps above, copy and paste your document into the textbox below and click Submit. The next activity uses a rich text area. You can tab to the editor body. Press ALT-F10 to get to the toolbar. Press ESC to return to the editor body. A save button is available in the top toolbar all the way to the right and will become visible when it receives focus.
Be sure to save your reverse outline, and use your comments to make revisions to your essay draft-which you will submit at the end of Module 7. When making these revisions, you should ask yourself the following questions:
o Do the main ideas you've written down flow logically from one to the next?
o Are the issues organized? Do they reflect the order presented in the thesis statement?
o Were you able to fill out the PIE information for each supporting paragraph?
o Are there any gaps in information?
o Is there more information on one issue over others or vice versa?
o Do any issues or examples stand out as being out of order?
Format your homework according to the following formatting requirements:
o The answer should be typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides.
o The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
o Also include a reference page. The Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
